Figuarts ZERO - Monkey D. Luffy (New World ver.)

As a huge fan of One Piece and an anime figure collector, I'm a proud owner of this Figuarts ZERO - Monkey D. Luffy (New World ver.). This is my second Figuarts ZERO and my first from One Piece characters.

This version is a part of the New World series, it depicts his appearance after 2 years of training with the "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh and the crew is now heading for the new world. I'm planning to complete the Straw Hat Pirates characters in their appearance after the 2-year time-skip (that's if my wallet allows me) but I was not able to get them all on the first production releases so I am now waiting for the re-releases. It is really hard to hunt these figures when you missed the availability period and because of that, the prices online becomes a lot higher than the manufacturer recommended price.

This figure was first released late September 2011 for 1,575 yen. Then re-released mid January 2012 for 1800 yen. I got on the 2nd release from Hobbylink Japan at a discounted price :)
It stands about 140 mm. I'm amazed by the amount of details of this figure considering the size.
See size comparisons below.

Figuarts ZERO - Straw Hat Pirates (New World ver.)

For those who don't know, Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hats Pirates and the main character of One Piece (more details here). If you're not into this anime or manga series yet, better start now because you're actually missing the best manga/anime ever (if you're into this kind things of course).

Below are the box shots of this figure.

It's really nice to see these figures while still in the box, specially with windowed boxes like this. The best way to appreciate the boxes are to take photos of them while the figure are still in it. Once you removed the figure out of the box, its either you throw the box or keep it in case you decide to sell the figure in the future.
Some collectors displays them while still in the box. But for me, I love to see them displayed as they are meant to. And besides, I don't have room for these boxes on my display case, I don't even have room to display all my collection!

Anyway, as you can see in the images above, the front part has the official gold Toei sticker, it means that it is intended for the Japanese market. International distributions has the silver Toei sticker. And since I purchased this from HLJ, it has the gold one. This is the proof of authenticity. But I read somewhere that these stickers are also being faked. By the way I hate bootlegs, and I make sure that my collections are all genuine.

As you can see, it does not come with any other parts and accessories, just the base stand.

Nice details on every angle. As you can see, the face and the likeness is spot on with the manga and the anime series. There is some japanese quote on the base that i cannot read, but I read somewhere that it is saying "I will become the pirate king" which is you may call his catch phrase because he tells that to everyone. Luffy can stand perfectly without the base, so if you don't have enough space in your shelf you can display him without the base.

There were just some visible seams but it is negligible. Not too many paint details on the yellow sash but it's quite fine because the color is light and natural shadows falls visibly. The short jeans is nicely done with its dry brush like painting technique, it looks faded in some areas specially the edges. There are some earlier figures of Luffy that has the edges of the jeans all white. Not too realistic, but the same look with the anime. But since this is 3D figure, I prefer it to look more realistic without looking too different from the anime, same goes with my gundam models.

This pose was taken from the part where he gives thanks to Rayleigh for supporting and training him, very true to the anime. The face expression looks a lot like Luffy, the details on the small scar below the left eye is noticeable even on this size. I also like the mold and shading details on the red shirt. The details on the sandals were also given the dry brush like painting technique I think, because of the 2 color tone, same is true with the straw hat. The torso and the abs looks muscular as it is on the series. I just thought that the x scar on his chest were too big and too brown. Doesn't really look like a scar but some big dry leaves pasted on the chest. But this is nothing too serious and overall, I am satisfied with the way it looks.

I hope you enjoyed this gallery. Check out other One Piece Figuarts ZERO here.
