Hot Toys: Iron Man 3 - War Machine Mark II MMS Diecast Review (Part 1)

Hot Toys: Iron Man 3 - War Machine Mark II MMS Diecast Review (Part 1)

Hey guys! Here's another Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece review. This time I'll be featuring my 1st Diecast MMS, The Hot Toys: Iron Man 3 - War Machine Mark II MMS Diecast. This is just my 5th Hot Toys Sixth Scale collectible and I still consider myself as a beginner in sixth scale figure collecting. In fact this is my first Iron Man armor figure. So please forgive me if I talk about things that you probably knew already like the back of your hands, and please forgive my ignorance on other Iron Man MMS that was previously released.

I'll do my best to cover all the important details about this figure as much as possible. So if you're reading this to help you decide on getting one of these, or if you already own one and just want to have some kind of guide, don't worry, I got your back.

Note that most of this review also applies to Hot Toys: Iron Man 3 - Iron Patriot MMS Diecast since that these figures are actually identical except from the colors, the additional Don Cheadle headsculpt and a few other things. I do have the Iron Patriot already so I'll be having a separate review for that later.

In my excitement, I took a lot photos of this amazing figure, so to make this review a low-memory PC friendly, I decided to break this review into sections as below. You can click the link if you want to jump to any of these sections.

Part 1: Introduction

To start, let's talk about the armor first. This is the War Machine Mark II, the armored Iron Man battlesuit specifically made for Col. James Rhodes. Don't confuse War Machine Mark II with Iron Man Mark II for they both can actually be referred to as War Machine. The Iron Man Mark II is the one that was modified by Hammer Industries and made the first War Machine armor. War Machine Mark II is a totally new armor built by Tony Stark himself.

I bet some of you hated this armor since it wasn't even featured in the Iron Man 3 movie. It did show up however, rebranded as Iron Patriot. While this armor, in this specific color scheme wasn't a part of the movie, it is some way connected to the Iron Man 3 movie storyline. It was featured in the Iron Man 3 Prelude comics #1 & #2. The timeline of story in the comics was before, during and after the events in the Avengers movie, and before the events in Iron Man 3.

In the comics, Tony hated the Hammer Tech that was shoved to his precious Mark II and was seen dismantling it, while telling Rhodey that he won't be using the Mark II (aka War Machine Mark I) anymore. Since Rhodey still needed that armor to serve the country, Tony made an armor that is specifically calibrated for him. It was then when the War Machine Mark II was born.

Rhodey was tasked by Stark to put on his shoes and save the world as Iron Man in this armor while he's quite busy building the Stark Towers. Rhodey was on a mission in Hong Kong during the climactic events in the Avengers. So when someone asks where War Machine is during the alien invasion, this is the answer.

Rhodey actually went to New York to help the Avengers, but the battle was already won and he ended meeting up with the team at the Shawarma house.

Why am I talking about this instead of reviewing the figure? I just want to give you a good understanding of the existence of this figure. It may not be rightful for the Movie Masterpiece title, but it has its own right of having a Hot Toys sixth scale treatment. It was announced more than a year ago, around April of 2013 and was scheduled for 1st quarter of 2014 release.

I decided that I'll be getting it as soon as I saw the promotional photos. I love the gunmetal/silver color scheme and I find it way a lot cooler than Iron Patriot's red/silver/blue colors. Tony Stark agrees with me as he kept bashing the Iron Patriot rebrand in the movie. Don't get me wrong, I also like the Iron Patriot, it's just that this is a lot more of a Battlesuit.

I preordered this one as soon as it went available on Figmation. They have the best price offer for it at that time. It was then released last January 2014, earlier than the first two Diecast announced, the Iron Patriot MMS and Mark XLII MMS. It reached my hands last March 2014 along with The Wolverine MMS (Check out my "Look What I Got" here). Join me in my unboxing reminiscence. Click the link below for the next page.
