Review: Tsume XTRA - Pain

Review: Tsume XTRA - Pain

A few days ago we reviewed Tsume XTRA - Uzumaki Naruto. To follow-up, here we have Tsume XTRA - Pain, the second addition to the XTRA series collection. Kudos to Figmation for providing us this limited edition figure to review. So without further ado, let's check out this epic villain of Naruto manga/anime series.

Last time I made some introduction about Tsume and their product series. So if you're not familiar with this company, you can check out my previous review to give you some idea.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

Pain as we know in the Naruto storyline is actually Nagato, who is using the Six Paths of Pain technique to manipulate corpses/bodies with chakra receivers, using his Rinnegan. This figure is based on one of the Six Paths of Pain, the Deva Path.

The Deva Path is actually the body of Yahiko, Nagato's best friend, who died entrusting their mission to find peace to Nagato. After his death, Nagato reanimated Yahiko's body as the most powerful and cherished of Nagato's Six Paths of Pain, which commonly referred to as simply Pain.

This figure was released September of 2013, along with the XTRA 01 - Uzumaki Naruto. These first two figures under the XTRA series was actually meant to be displayed together in a face to face duel to relive one of Konoha's epic battle in the Invasion of Pain Arc.

Just like XTRA 01, this figure is said to be limited to 3000 pieces only. It's not numbered though, so we can't really tell that they manufactured 3000 pcs only. Regardless, this figure isn't really available everywhere and I haven't really seen a lot of collectors owning it. It is priced at 44.90 € (Inc.Tax) in the Tsume website, same price as XTRA 01, but of course, price will be different outside Europe.

The figure stands 185 mm. Below is the height comparison against XTRA 01.

This is how it's meant to be displayed. This would look really nice in a diorama.

Box Art and Contents

Tsume XTRA - Pain

Box is smaller than the XTRA 01 Uzumaki Naruto. It only measures 70 mm x 120 mm x 170 mm, and weighs about 240 grams. The box art and design follows the same style as XTRA 01.

Tsume XTRA - PainTsume XTRA - Pain

Front has the prototype photo, character and series name and tells that it's XTRA 02. Box has that french wordings as well.

Left and right side is identical, showing and promoting the XTRA 01.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

It also has that seal on the top part of the box.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

Like I mentioned on my XTRA 01 review, you can open the box at the bottom since it's just glued. This will preserve the seal at the top of the box. I'm not saying that you can walk away reselling this on ebay or elsewhere as an MISB (Mint in Sealed Box) merchandise after opening. I'm simply saying that you can display the box in your shelf as if it's sealed.

This are the contents. Like XTRA 01, you'll need to put it together.

Bringing the Parts Together

Starting with the base.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

Unlike the XTRA 01, you'll notice that the pegs are on the base and not under the feet of the figure. The feet this time have holes. This is better since you can actually display the figure without the base as opposed to the pegged foot. I haven't really tried letting the figure stand without the base.

Put the lower body to the base. Then attach the upper body.

Attach the head. And lastly, his Chakra rod (aka Chakra receivers). The Chakra rod is a very small piece of plastic. Remember to guard it with your life or you'll end up losing it by simply letting it fall on the floor, specially in dark places.

Notice that there's a small groove on the coat near near the left hand. The Chakra rod is supposed to be inserted there to keep it from moving. I find that this figure is more sturdy than XTRA 01. The parts don't easily detach by simply knocking it down.

Personal Impressions

This figure is well made. Let's check every detail.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

Starting with the head, all the facial features of Pain are totally spot-on. The face shape, the forehead protector, the eyebrows, the Rinnegan eyes, and the Chakra rod piercings. There's also some what seems to be Chakra receivers under his lower lips, but it's hard to see because of the chin-high collar of the Akatsuki coat.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

The hair's orange color really matches the color in the Anime, but like XTRA 01, the hair spikes aren't as fine as in the drawings. I guess it's really hard to translate such spiky hair in 3D. At least it's not really a big deal and doesn't look bad in this figure.

Oddly, there's a seam-line on the left shoulder but none on the right. The left arm is not detachable though. Well, I actually didn't try hard enough to pull it out.

Notice the many piercings in his ears, nicely detailed.

An overall shot of the figure. You can see here the detailing of the Akatsuki coat. Colors are accurate and has all the features of the coat including those signature clouds.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

His right arm has a ring on the thumb which is nicely painted in silver. Notice those Chakra rod under the forearm, it seems not properly painted, only the tips. Not really a big deal as it isn't really noticeable.

The fingers though, particularly the forefinger seems to be weirdly bent, unlike the prototype. This is most probably because it was bent while inside the packaging. A problem with this kind of packaging. I wish Tsume would consider a clamshell and windowed packaging for the XTRA product line in the future, like those with Figuarts ZEROs. I wouldn't mind an additional 2 or 4 € for a nice and presentable packaging.

In this shot, you can see clearly what I'm trying to say about the fingers.

More close-up shot showing the Akatsuki coat details.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

The Chakra rod/receiver. The only weapon of Pain.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

All his fingernails, hands and feet, are all painted with red. I wonder if that's the case in the anime, I didn't really noticed.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

A good full view of the back. Notice the paint shadings on the white parts of his feet. Nice touch.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

In this shot you can clearly see his Chakra receiver necklace. Nicely painted even if it's somewhat hidden.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

Only the eyebrows are what's giving him an expression but it did the job of bringing the figure to life. And the Rinnegan eyes, gives him that badass look.

And here he is next to XTRA 05 - Uchiha Sasuke.

Tsume XTRA - Pain

Pain is one of the main villain of the Naruto storyline. He's a villain yet he's a likable character due to his backstory and how he ended up understnding Naruto's resolve. It's just too bad that there aren't much Pain figures out there to collect. There we're attempts from Bandai's Figuarts ZERO but it was somehow cancelled.

This figure may not be perfect and have some minor issues. But what the heck, this is still Pain and it's still great to have a decent figure of him in every Naruto fan's display shelves. If you're getting XTRA 01, then you should be getting this figure as well. XTRA 01 and 02 are meant to be displayed together anyway. That does not mean this figure is just a companion to XTRA 01. This figure's sculpting and paint application is enough to justify owning one. Pain, being the founder of the Akatsuki, and one awesome character by itself has the right to have a space in our display shelves.

I hope we can get more Akatsuki characters under Tsume XTRA product line in the future.

That's all and thanks for reading my review. Next up will be my review for the Tsume XTRA 05 - Uchiha Sasuke (Akatsuki). Watch out for it.
