The sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates, Usopp. This is my tenth Figuarts ZERO and my eighth from One Piece characters of this product line. This figure is based on Usopp’s appearance after the 2-year time skip and so is a part of the New World series collection.
Usopp is the fourth member of the Straw Hat Pirates crew. His overall looks after the time skip are so much different from his pre time-skip appearance. He has become muscular and more manlier (more on Usopp here).
This figure was released late October 2011 for ¥2,310. I was not able to get him at that time for some reasons but I was able to get it last March at Anime Export. It seems like they got a lot of these on stock at that time while other major online stores has none. This figure was also announced for June 2012 re-release so it wasn’t hard to find as some other One Piece Figuarts ZERO’s.
Usopp (New World ver.) stands about 145mm. Just almost as tall as Luffy (New World ver.). See the height comparison with the other Straw Hat characters below.
This is still the same photo that I used earlier and Sanji, Franky and Brook is still missing. Sanji and Brook is announced to be re-released on August, but I'm still waiting for Franky’s re-release schedule. I already got all those three on preorders.
Box Art and Contents
The box art is a standard New World ver. design, but this time, the highlight color is yellow. I don’t know why Usopp is yellow, maybe the pants, but it looks more brown to me.
Lower right of the box front (just above the Bandai logo) is a gold Toei sticker of authenticity, which means this is intended for the Japanese market. That is because I bought it from Anime Export which is an online store from Japan. The left part is the side window with the photo of the upper part of Usopp.
The back part of the box are some features of the figure itself and a photo of all the Straw Hat Pirates under the New World ver. series. The right part of the box, again has all the Straw Hat Pirates but with Usopp on the middle front, the same style they did on the other figures on this series.
Inside the box is the figure itself, the detachable "Black Kabuto” which is not black (more on that later), a standard base stand, a promotional leaflet and nothing else.
Personal Impressions
Usopp looks nice in this figure, but I’m not sure if they got the right proportions. It seems to me that the head is too huge for the body and the neck is too short.
The face features closely resembles Usopp except for the goatee. There is something about it that looks odd.
The body looks muscular but it’s a little smaller than it should be and the loose pants also made this more obvious. It isn’t too annoying though since the body sculpt is quite nice. No obvious paint issues on this upper portion of the body.
The goggles though well painted has an issue of defying the gravity. I supposed to rest on his chest but it is hanging a bit upwards which looks unnatural.
The pants also looks nice with fine paint shading. The paint job on the details is amazing without any paint issues. The white/blue part seems to be done with dry brushing.
Usopp’s hair is supposed to form a curly round-ish hairball on the back of his head but in this figure, this isn’t like that. Again, this is just a small issue unless you will display it with his back facing you and you’re holding a snapshot of Usopp’s hair from the anime/manga to compare.
The red satchel is movable but cannot be removed… well, I haven’t really tried so hard to remove it. Painting is also nice on this one. In this angle you will also see amazing paint shading job on the back part of his pants. Really nice.
The details on his pair of boots are also looking good. It isn’t like the other boots that were just painted shiny black. These boots also got paint shading and it’s really impressive.
The base stand. Just like the others, it got Usopp’s own jolly roger (notice the round lump of hair at the back), his name, some Japanese quote that I cannot read, and a “Dead or Alive”.
The one thing that really annoys me is his slingshot weapon. After the 2-year time skip, Usopp’s newly developed slingshot is called “Black Kabuto”, and this one is painted in green… sheeesh!. This is a major issue for all the fans since we all know that it is supposed to be black.
Though Usopp has a green slingshot before the time-skip, it is larger than this. It isn’t a very big issue like chipped paint or deformed figure, and it can be fixed with some paint. But what annoys me is that Bandai isn’t paying close attention to these details and just wanted to quickly release the figures since these new versions are hot.
Generally, this figure is a nice addition to my collection. The minor issues that I mentioned does not actually degrade it’s overall appearance. The paint job is almost perfect on every part. It’s nice to see Usopp standing along with the rest of the Straw Hat pirates and I am happy to have this on my collection.
