Figuarts ZERO - Caymy

It's time to feature another one from my Figuarts ZERO collection. Yeah I know, a lot of you hates Figuarts ZEROs because of some crappy releases. But that does not include this Figuarts ZERO - Caymy (or Camie or Keimi) with Pappug on those list. This is one of those simple, yet a nice release from Bandai. This is my thirteenth Figuarts ZERO and my ninth from One Piece of the same product line.

Caymy is a mermaid from Fishman island. She always comes along with her master Pappug, the starfish. She became friend with the Strawhats after they saved her and Pappug from a Sea King (more of Caymy here).

Being a mermaid, Caymy has a pink fish-like lower body and a human upper body part. In this figure, Caymy is depicted on her post time-skip appearance as she is wearing a spaghetti strap top with a jagged lower hem (she was wearing a t-shirt during the pre time-skip). This should have been titled as Caymy (New World ver.) since this is actually the post time-skip version of her. They did that on Jinbei right?

I purchased this figure from Hobbylink Japan last year, March 2012, along with Figuarts ZERO - Hatake Kakashi which was released on the same month. I preordered both figures earlier thinking that these two will be out of stock soon on that store. But crap, Caymy has already went through a number of discounted sale price since then. I paid 2,660 yen for this before, but the lowest price offer I've seen from HLJ so far for this item is 1,000 yen. That was during their Black Friday sale. More than 60% off. It is even on sale on some other online hobby shops by the time I'm writing this post. That sucks, isn't it? I guess only few figure collectors and One Piece fan wants this particular figure that it went on sale everywhere.

On sale or not on sale, for me Figuarts ZERO - Caymy is still a good buy because it's a very well made Bandai product. It is one of those Figuarts ZEROs that looks quite close to the promotional images unlike some other releases. This was released exactly last March 17, 2012 and has an SRP of 2,940 yen. It's still a good thing that I got her at little lower price on HLJ :)

She stands about 115 cm. Below are the height comparisons against Figuarts ZERO - Nami (New World ver.) and Figuarts ZERO - Sanji (New World ver.). These three figures below is how Bandai recommends displaying this figure just like in the box art.

The box is as small as most Figuarts ZERO's boxes. It measure's 120mm x 160 mm x 120mm. It has a pink color that matches Caymy's fish-like lower half. It is windowed on the front, top and left side which enables the figure to be clearly visible while inside the box.

On the front, it follows the design of those non New World ver. figures which has some pattern around the front window, much the same as Figuarts ZERO - Boa Hancock and Figuarts ZERO- Portgas D. Ace. Figure title written on front as usual which is Caymy. I wonder why they did not include Pappug there. Also notice that it has a gold foil TOEI sticker of authenticity. That's because this is a Japan version since I got it directly from HLJ.

On the left side, it has a window with a photo of the figure. On the right side is also a photo of Caymy, this time with Nami and Sanji. Back side are some promotional stuff mostly written in Japanese. Top part is a simple rectangular window with the figure title. At the bottom part is a lot Japanese writings that I can't read so does not really matter to me.

Out of the box, Caymy does not come with any alternate/optional parts, only the base stand, Pappug and his shades, plus a clear plastic support for Pappug to stand properly.

Personal Impressions

She may not be my favorite Figuarts ZERO but I love this figure. I like the shape of her upper body. It may not be realistically shaped around the rib cage but guess what? She's a mermaid!

The pose is just fitting for a mermaid and it's a good decision that they included Pappug, not only as an add-on character, but as some way to balance her since she cannot stand alone. Placing her arms this way, it made her squeeze forward her breast a little, giving it a more sexy look.

I've seen that similar pose with 1/144 World Scale Shirahoshi and The Grandline Lady Special - Shirahoshi. I guess that squeezing breast posing technique is a little famous on mermaids :)

The face isn't exactly how she looked like in her post-timeskip appearance in the manga/anime. Her face looked closer to she looks during the pre-timeskip. She seems to be more matured and adult-like after 2 years, but she's looks younger in this figure. Well, I guess that's answers why they didn't call her "New World ver". They couldn't claim this as a post time-skip Caymy.

Overall face looks fine to be but my only complaint about it are the eyes. I can't remember her having red eyes. It's supposed to be dark brown as in the anime. If not for the color, those eyes would have been perfect. The mouth is painted nicely, no offensive paint issues.

Every fan knows that this is her post time-skip clothing, so it can't really be denied of being a New World ver. And speaking of that black spaghetti top, there isn't anything to say about it's simplicity but it was finely done. There aren't any paint issues here given that thin strap. If it isn't done neatly, you may see some black paint spilled over her chest and shoulders.

But on the contrary, the necklace isn't free of paint mistakes. Red paint is all over the edges of the necklace. At a distance, it may just look like the necklace is thick, but up close, you'll see those obvious paint issues.

That green hair has some very fine paint shading, but it doesn't really add much details to it. Well, I couldn't imagine giving it more darker detail since it's supposed to be bright green. So I guess this should be fine.

You will notice the paint shading that accentuates her cleavage, it looks naturally nice. That's one of the strength of this figure :)

In this shot, you'll notice some PVC mold imperfection on her right arm, but is wasn't  big deal. The white bracelet seems to be lacking in detail and it's supposed to be light blue. Why didn't Bandai researched more about her colors? It only takes a 2-minute Googling to find out her correct colors right?

Her half fish lower body is quite ok. It isn't very detailed as compared to POP Sailing Again Shirahoshi's fish half body part, but for a Figuarts ZERO, this level of detail is fine. And besides, this fish scale size is actually anime/manga accurate.

This is where most Figuarts ZERO fails - the seamline on the hair. It looks ugly on this angle, given her bright green color. Can't they just mold the hair in one whole chunk of plastic to deal with this?

No butt-crack shown unlike POP Shirahoshi. The detail of fin looks fine with me.

Here is a shot showing the whole fish half fish lower body part. It may be lacking in detail but for me it's acceptable. Well, they could have added some paint shading and scale detailing though.

Here is the fish tail. Detailed just the same as the fin.

Looking at the back part. It seem like the arms are joined at the shirt part. They must have painted the shirt first before gluing the arms. That must be the technique they did to prevent spilling the black paint to the shoulders.

It tuns out it cannot be done to jagged lower hem of her shirt as there are some noticeable paint mistakes on her bare back skin.

The hands are molded nicely, but it lack details comparing to other Figuarts ZEROs.

A closer shot of the Crimin print. As all of you are aware of, Caymy is a servant of Pappug the starfish who is actually a celebrity designer and owns the "Criminal Brand Company". And all Caymy's clothing are supplied by Pappug's Crimin branded clothings.

This is a shot of Pappug without his sunglasses. I say Bandai got his correct apperance. Who would mess up with this simple character anyway.

This is a shot of Pappug with his sunglasses on. The sunglasses is a just simple translucent black plastic. He looks better like this, giving him more celebrity-like appearance.

A shot of the back of Pappug's headdress.

The base is a typical Figuarts ZERO base. It has her name Caymy, a "Dead or Alive" phrase which really make sense since she isn't a pirate, and some Japanese characters that I can't read. No jolly roger since as I have mentioned, she isn't a pirate. But they could have at least put the Crimin insignia there.

In general, there isn't any particular paint issues that bothers me. The pose is good, the mold and detailing is finely done. There are some shortcomings which is probably why this isn't a very famous and sought after figure, but as for now, I don't see any other figure of Caymy that looks better than this.

I don't know about everybody else, but for me this character and figure is lovable. She may be simple looking and does not really resemble Caymy very well, but given the price of this figure (specially if you got it on sale), and a well made mass reproduction, I say it is a nice addition to every Figuarts ZERO collection. I hope MegaHouse will release a POP version of her soon.
